Blues Clues Cake

~ Blues Clues Cake ~

Tara's Blues Clues Cake Design Instructions:

This was my first cake I had ever made with fondant.  It was for my daughters 1st Birthday. I used a Wilton cake pan in the shape of Blue's face from Blues clues.

I would suggest to butter and flour the pan before adding the cake mix.  It makes the cake come out much easier. I used about 2 boxes (or a little less) of cake mix.  I just followed the directions on the box. When the cake was done baking, I let it cool down for about 30 minutes to an hour.

Before you take the cake out of the pan cut straight across the extra uneven cake that rose when you baked it. Place the cake on whatever it is going to be served on so you can decorate it easier. I used a round piece of cardboard.

After I placed the cake on the cardboard I cut it in half to make it a 2 layer cake. I put banana pudding inside. Then I just put the other half back on the cake.  I used fondant and regular vanilla icing to cover the cake.

First I put the icing in the microwave for about 30 seconds to make it smooth. Then I put it all over the cake with a butter knife. After that I put some powdered sugar on my table (so the fondant wouldn't stick) and flattened the fondant into a big square so it would fit over the cake. Make the fondant larger than the cake size so you know that you will have enough to cover it.

If you have to make the fondant a certain color you can use food coloring. Just make a ball with the fondant and push down in the center of the ball with your finger and add the coloring. Then knead the fondant and add more if you want a darker color.

When I decorated this cake I made the outline first. Then I piped everything else on the cake. To decorate the cake I used the icing that comes in the tube and I bought some attachments that screw on the tube to pipe out the icing.

It was pretty easy and fun. I would suggest doing a practice cake first so you
can have a perfect cake the second time around!
