Easy Fondant Frosting Recipe

2 c. sugar
1 1/4 c. hot water
2 tbsp. white corn syrup
Pinch of salt
Pinch of cream of tartar
1 tbsp. real butter
Vanilla

In a saucepan combine all ingredients; stir until sugar dissolves. Cover pan, cook 5 minutes; then uncover and boil syrup without stirring to soft ball stage (238 degrees).

Remove from heat and pour into a bowl. Let cool to slightly warm (110 degrees) then beat until thick and creamy. It will set instantly so keep an eye on the mixture while beating. Turn onto smooth surface and knead lightly until satiny.

Wrap tightly in waxed paper and aluminum foil or a screw-top jar and leave in refrigerator to age for at least one day. When ready to use, melt in small amounts over hot water (double boiler). Tint with a few drops food coloring. Mold into whatever shapes desired. For different flavoring, use desired extracts in place of vanilla.

If frosting entire cake, pour over cake while still warm and thin and set cake on cooling rack. You may re-melt the fondant overflow for reuse.

Other Cake Frosting Options

Prepared Frosting - Easiest and quickest, prepared canned frostings are available in grocery stores in the baking aisle with the cake mixes. They generally come in white, chocolate, and a handful of other popular flavors. Keep a few ready-to-use tube frostings on hand in various basic colors to add the finishing touches.

Homemade Frosting - Dig up that family recipe or check out one of the many onlin recipe sites and make your cake frosting from scratch. Prepare in advance and be sure to plan how much of each color will be needed for both basic foundation and decorative additions.   Don't forget the translucent
cake decorating gel.
