How to Make a Kitty Cake

A home made fluffy kitty cake is simple to make by following these step-by-step instructions.

From making a cake board to display your classic creation, to frosting and detailing with ease, it’s all here...

I made this cake for my daughter Elizabeth’s 12th birthday and it was a big hit!

INGREDIENTS:

One Cake Mix of your choice

Two Containers Ready-Made Frosting - white

Food Coloring

Black Licorice Whips

Necco wafers, Gumdrops (optional)

Cake Board

METHOD:

1. Bake two 8 or 9 inch cake layers as directed. Remove from pans and let cool completely. While you’re waiting, make a cake board to display your beautiful cake creation.

2. Freeze the layers for about ½ hr. prior to frosting. This will make them less crumbly and easier to frost. Just place them in large resealable bags and place on a cookie sheet in the freezer. Check here for more Cake Baking Tips.

3. Next, cut the edge off one of the layers - about 1 ½ inches in width, as shown in the drawing below. Save the cake piece to form the tail and ears. This cake layer is now smaller in diameter and will be used to make the kitty’s head.

4. Position the large and small layers on your cake board to resemble kitty’s head and body. Frost both layers, first reserving about ½ cup frosting. The cut layer (head) will require more frosting to cover the open sides. You might wish to use this easy base frosting recipe as a "primer" beneath the final frosting layer. It makes a frosting that is thin and easy to spread.

5. Cut pointy ears from the cake remnants and place on top of kitty’s head. Next, position the kitty’s tail, making a bend in it as shown. Frost both tail and ears white.

6. Color a small amount of the ½ cup reserved frosting black (add a few drops of blue food coloring to chocolate fudge frosting). Color remaining frosting pink by adding a drop or two of red food coloring.

7. Dab the inside of the ears with pink frosting, and fashion the nose and mouth as shown. Make oval shaped eyes with the black frosting to make kitty’s eyes. For these fine details, use a toothpick to smooth the frosting into the desired shapes.

If you’d rather use candy for the eyes, Necco wafers or gumdrop slices would work well. Add whiskers made from 2 inch pieces of licorice whips.

8.  Write your birthday message on kitty's tummy in colored frosting.  Now you’re done...
