Homemade Pilgrim Costume for Boys

Materials:

1/2 yard White Felt
Gold foil
Black belt
Black pants and high white socks
Long sleeved black jersey
Black top hat from party store
3 Fabric Snaps

Instructions:

Pilgrim Buckles

First cut two rectangular pilgrim buckles from the gold foil, as shown here.  Leave a cut-out in the center.  These buckles will be placed on both the pilgrim hat and belt.

Pilgrim Hat

Next, cut a one-inch length of white felt to make a hat band for the black top hat.  Cut and piece it in the front so that the black hat shows through the hole in the buckle.  Hot glue the white felt hat band to the black hat.  Hot glue the gold buckle to the front center of the hat.

Pilgrim Collar and Cuffs

Cut the pilgrim collar and cuffs from the white felt, using the template shapes as shown.  Sew fabric snaps to each piece where the little circles indicate.

Pilgrim Pants, Shirt, Shoes and Socks

Use black sweat pants (preferably short ones) to dress your little pilgrim.  The gathered pants legs (knickers) should come just below the knee.  I found black football pants at the discount clothing store, which did the job perfectly. 

Add any type of long-sleeved black jersey or shirt.  I made do with a black turtleneck, with the neck turned under. 

Next have your little pilgrim put on high white socks and black shoes.  If desired, you can even make a couple of extra gold pilgrim buckles and attach them to the shoes with the laces.

This homemade pilgrim costume is great for the class play, or just to remind your Thanksgiving Day guests of the history of our great country!
